The World Health Organization has modified its guidance for pregnant women considering a COVID-19 vaccine. The agency has dropped the opposition to immunization for most pregnant women, unless they have a high risk.
WHO had previously stated that it did not recommend COVID-19 vaccination of pregnant women with Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, which was followed by commotion and disappointment expressed by experts. Several experts stated that WHO’s earlier stance was not in line with the guidance provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and would eventually end up confusing pregnant women looking for clear advice on the subject. Although the vaccines have not been tested in pregnant women, but no harmful effects have been noted in animal studies.
